Founded by the British-American influencer, who faces charges of rape and human trafficking in Romania, The Real World has attracted a wide following among young men and boys. Tate’s app has a global community of more than 280,000 members and promises to teach them how to become wealthy through disruptive marketing strategies.
But critics say the site aims to exploit vulnerable teens and function as an illegal pyramid scheme that profits mainly by recruiting more members. The platform’s affiliate marketers post short clips of Tate’s long-form content on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, encouraging users to subscribe to the site with their affiliate link, which gives them a small commission when new subscribers sign up.
Nathan Pope, a 34-year-old Australian, has launched an online petition urging app stores like Google Play and the App Store, as well as companies that process subscription payments online, to stop working with The Real World. It has gathered more than 9,000 signatures so far.
